German statesman Otto von Bismarck may have believed that ‘politics is the art of the possible,’ but then again, he never served in Congress.1 Critics of the debt ceiling bill are merely the latest to make the point. But Bismark was right and in a country where one party has more in common with Che Guevara than Thomas Jefferson, it’s probably the best that could be had.
Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of reasons for opposing the Fiscal Responsibility Act. It’s just that those Republicans screaming the loudest against it aren’t citing the real ones.
